“Cliffhanger” – Breathtaking action blockbuster on the Rocky Mountains
Released in 1993, Cliffhanger directed by Renny Harlin is not only a blockbuster action adventure film, but also an icon of Hollywood action films in the 90s. With the participation of action star Sylvester Stallone and an impressive cast such as John Lithgow, Michael Rooker and Janine Turner, Cliffhanger attracted audiences thanks to its breathtaking stunts, spectacular scenes and emotional story.
The film opens with a tragic accident on the majestic Rocky Mountains. Gabe Walker (Sylvester Stallone), a veteran mountain climber, along with his teammate Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker) and his girlfriend Jessie (Janine Turner) participate in a rescue mission. However, the accident occurs when Sarah, Hal's girlfriend, falls from the rope and dies before Gabe's eyes. The heartbreaking incident causes Gabe to withdraw from work and sink into guilt.
A year later, Gabe returns to the Rocky Mountains to pack up his belongings and try to overcome the pain of the past. However, the peace is quickly shattered when a group of criminals led by Eric Qualen (John Lithgow) hijacks a plane carrying cash. The robbery fails, the plane crashes into the mountains, forcing the criminals to ask Gabe and Hal to locate and recover the suitcases containing millions of dollars that have gone missing.
However, Gabe soon realizes the true plot of the criminals and is determined to fight them. He not only has to confront enemies equipped with sophisticated weapons but also has to fight the harsh nature of the Rocky Mountains, where cliffs are steep, snowstorms and dangers lurk. The scenes of climbing mountains, chasing on ice and snow, jumping from one cliff to another bring a feeling of suffocation, authenticity and drama to the audience.
Notably, Cliffhanger was filmed in the Alps (Italy), which possesses majestic and rugged natural landscapes, contributing to the tense and satisfying atmosphere of the film. In addition, the music composed by Trevor Jones skillfully enhanced the emotions of each scene, creating suspenseful and lingering moments.
Sylvester Stallone has excellently transformed into the role of Gabe Walker - an imperfect hero, both strong and brave, but also filled with pain and remorse. Stallone's performance not only clearly shows the dramatic action scenes but also depicts the psychological depth of the character. John Lithgow also made a strong impression with the villain Eric Qualen - a smart but ruthless criminal.
