From frozen roads to Himalayan iceāhis scars lead the way
The sequel to 2021's The Ice Road picks up as veteran ice-road trucker Mike McCann, played again by Liam Neeson, honors his late brother by scattering his ashes on Mount Everest. The journey leads him from Canadaās frozen lakes to Nepalās notorious āRoad to the Sky,ā a treacherous mountain pass at 12,000 feet. Alongside a local mountain guide and a former Cree driver, Mike must protect a bus full of tourists and villagers from mercenary threats, freeze-over terrain, and his own grief.
Directed and written by Jonathan Hensleigh, the film retains its survival-thriller heart while upgrading its scale. Expect precarious vehicles teetering on ice bridges, avalanches, altitude challenges, and hand-to-hand combat in subzero blasts. Realistic stunts and sweeping Himalayan vistas replace the first filmās Canadian boreal setting, offering big-screen spectacle and adrenaline.
Mikeās team includes a mountain guide (co-lead), a scientist, villagers, and returning support from the previous filmās crew. The corporate mercenary threat introduces a new dimension: theyāre after a rare mineral beneath the roadāadding greed and crossover plot beyond survival.
Shot in Victoria, Australia (doubling for Nepal) with virtual-production techniques and on-location mountain scenes, the sequel is sharper in look and richer in atmosphere. Financing includes Netflix, Amazon and Vertical Entertainmentāseparated by region but unified in ambition. Released in select theaters on JuneāÆ27,āÆ2025, followed by digital and eventual streaming rollout, it marks one of Neesonās final action entries before stepping back from genre work.
