In 1970s San Francisco, journalist Luisa Rey unravels a deadly corporate conspiracy tied to nuclear power. In modern-day England, Timothy Cavendish’s darkly comic misadventure in a nursing home offers both levity and insight into human resilience.

Centuries later, on a future Earth ravaged by corporate control, a genetically engineered fabricant named Sonmi-451 becomes the voice of rebellion in dystopian Neo Seoul. And even further still, in a far-flung tribal society after civilization’s collapse, goat herder Zachry faces his deepest fears while guiding a woman from a technologically advanced remnant of humanity. Each storyline is distinct in tone and style — from period drama to sci-fi epic — yet they bleed into one another, revealing how courage, love, and cruelty transcend lifetimes.

The film’s most ambitious feat is its casting: the same actors embody different roles in each timeline, crossing boundaries of race, gender, and morality. This narrative design reinforces the central theme — that we are all connected, and that the choices we make reverberate beyond our own lives. The music, especially the Cloud Atlas Sextet, becomes a haunting motif, binding the stories together like an echo traveling through time.
