Magic lies not in the realms—but in the girl who dares.

Hoffmann’s beloved Christmas tale through a lens of wonder, war, and inner transformation. Directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, this adaptation fuses ballet, steampunk flair, and otherworldly design into a dreamlike journey about growing up—and discovering who you truly are.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms' Trailer

At its heart is Clara Stahlbaum (Mackenzie Foy), a brilliant and curious young girl grieving the recent loss of her mother. On Christmas Eve, her godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman) presents her with a mysterious egg-shaped gift left behind by her mother. But the key to open it is missing—and in searching for it, Clara stumbles into a parallel universe hidden behind the folds of reality.

There, she discovers the Four Realms: the Land of Snowflakes, the Land of Flowers, the Land of Sweets, and the long-abandoned Fourth Realm—once ruled by Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), now considered dangerous and corrupt. As Clara befriends the noble Nutcracker soldier, Captain Philip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), and meets the enchanting Sugar Plum Fairy (Keira Knightley), she learns that not all is as sweet as it seems. Loyalties shift. Magic deceives. And the real key Clara must unlock is the courage within herself.

Nutcracker and the Four Realms review: Disney's movie is even more insane than it looks.

More than a fairytale, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a coming-of-age odyssey cloaked in seasonal magic. Its ballet sequences (led by Misty Copeland), opulent set designs, and Tchaikovsky-inspired score breathe new life into a story older than memory—but Clara's strength, intellect, and heart are what give the film its soul.

Because every realm needs a queen. And sometimes, the greatest gifts are the truths we’re afraid to face.
