DEATH OF A UNICORN (2025) — Some miracles should stay buried.

Death of a Unicorn (2025) is a darkly whimsical horror-thriller that blends corporate satire, creature myth, and moral reckoning into one twisted modern fable. Produced by A24 and helmed by debut director Alex Scharfman, the film takes the fantastical purity of a unicorn and drags it, bloodied and broken, into the ruthless world of greed and exploitation.

The story begins with Elliot (Paul Rudd), a well-meaning biotech executive, and his teenage daughter Ridley (Jenna Ortega) as they embark on a routine drive through upstate New York. Their night takes a horrific turn when they accidentally hit a unicorn on a foggy backroad. Dazed but stunned by what they’ve encountered, they contact Elliot’s employer—Biotech giant Vesaria Corp—which promptly sweeps in to claim the carcass.

But this is no fairy tale.

As the unicorn’s remains are transported to a secret research lab, strange things begin to happen. Those who come into contact with the body fall ill. Nature reacts violently. And Ridley, who secretly kept one of the creature’s shattered horns, begins to have terrifying visions—of a world once protected by ancient magic now screaming for revenge.

What unfolds is a spiraling descent into corporate horror, where executives fight over the unicorn’s "miraculous tissue," ethics are discarded, and the world teeters on a new kind of extinction. Elliot and Ridley must race against time to destroy the evidence, before the very essence of the creature turns everything it touches into a curse.

Visually unsettling and narratively provocative, Death of a Unicorn is part dark comedy, part environmental nightmare—and a sharp warning about humanity’s thirst to conquer what it doesn’t understand.
